A DO IT YOURSELF JOURNEY

My Story

Hello friend. If you’ve made it this far, you may also be a stay at home mom or maybe you are interested in DIY projects. You will find a little of both here!

Growing Up

I’ve always enjoyed building things! I remember working on projects around the house with my dad growing up. We built some outdoor houses for my rabbits, a wooden play fort in the backyard, a Chinese checkers board (I may have to recreate this one soon!) and many more. We didn’t have a fancy woodworking shop but always made it work with what we had.

Crafty craftswomen

In my early adulthood, I would dabble in projects here and there and always had so much fun. In college I built a loft bed to save space in a small room I rented (wish I could find a picture of this). I really enjoyed using recycled wood aka pallets aka free lumber. If I needed a simple piece of furniture I would always attempt to build it first.

Carpentry

At the age of 30 I finally decided that I wanted to be a carpenter! I found a local trade school and signed up for an apprenticeship. There was a waiting list of applicants so in the meanwhile, I joined a temp agency working as a laborer. This was a really cool experience! I was able to get a little bit of experience in a range of areas – I worked with a company that restored hardwood floors, one that built cabinets for big new apartment complexes, one that did restoration after disasters like fires and floods, and most excitedly, got to work with a carpenter on a small complex of townhouses being built.

I finally got the call that I was next up for an apprenticeship which would begin my four year journey to gaining journeyman status. But there was a slight plot twist – I had just found out that I was pregnant.

Stay-at-home

Fast forward a few years and I am blessed to be a stay-at-home-mom to my two sons, Ollie and Hank. My husband and I bought a house from 1961 and I just started remodeling it! My first project is redoing my boys room.
